Malente Symposia

How to deal with topical problems, which are so complexity that their solutions must necessarily be the result of compromises between conflicting interests, between idealistic visions and that which is realistically possible?
For more than 35 years the Dräger Foundation supports and organizes international conferences and symposia.
The Malente Symposia - named for a small North German town, where the first symposium took place in November 1981 - are the Foundation"s most comprehensive and best-known recurrent events on an international level, specifically intended to attract the attention of a broad public. They give German and international representatives from politics, industry and science, as well as representatives of international organisations, NGOs and others, the chance to expand networks, discuss specific topics, exchange ideas and knowledge, and prepare concrete proposals.
Past conferences among others addressed questions related to labor market and competition policy, to world trade and technology transfer, to globalization and the integration of East European transition countries into the world economy, the fight against poverty in emerging economies and - from the field of social order - the question as to the "ideal" health care system.
In 2004, youth employment, or "Youth@Work", was the topic tackled by the XV Malente Symposium which was organized in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) and the Youth Employment Network (YEN) - a joint initiative of the UN, the World Bank and the ILO. More
In 2006, the XVI Malente Symposium was called "Energy, Climate, and Future Welfare - Changing Global Dynamics", and held in cooperation with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. more
In 2008, the Dräger Foundation worked together with the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" (Kiel Marine Sciences) and the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius on the XVII Malente Symposium "More than Water - Oceans and Global Responsibility".
